Everest in May – Day 22

When Pierpoint says he’s coming for you. You run…

Heinrich “Spartacus” Henstock

Wow.

Wowwy, wow, wow, wow.

I posted yesterday that the leader in miles rucked had commented that he would be taking over on steps (stairs) climbed as soon as he got home from where he was at currently. He didn’t have stairs to climb, so he has essentially posted zero steps (stairs) climbed so far.

And I believe the guy.

What I didn’t know, was that some of our other challengers would say, “Oh no he didn’t!”

Yesterday we set two records for the challenge. Most steps (stairs) as a group in one day, and most steps (stairs) by a single person in one day.

Heinrich “Sparatacus” Henstock climbed 5,200 steps (stairs) in one day, making him the second challenger to complete the challenge by steps (stairs) and the new leader in steps (stairs).

I’m still a little in shock, frankly.

Here are the numbers for Day 22:

Miles rucked On Day 22: 35.67 miles.

Miles Rucked Through 22 Days: 545.73 miles.

Steps (Stairs) Climbed on Day 22: 9,904 stairs (990.40 flights)

Steps (Stairs) Climbed Through Day 22: 69,692 stairs (6,969.20 flights)

The Daily Rankings, as I mentioned I would start sharing, are as follows:

A little bit of friendly competition is always a good thing. Will it continue?

I hope so.

Everest in May – Week 3 Results: The Leaderboard

Go down swinging. And I’ll tell you, if you fight with all you have, more often than not, you won’t go down at all. You will win.

And for anybody wondering what your daily average is for miles and steps (stairs), here you go.

To complete the challenge in May, over 31 days, we should be:

Walking: 3.69 miles per day

Climbing: 369 steps (stairs) per day

No change in either leaderboard (rucking or steps(stairs)) from Week 2 to Week 3. I have a feeling that there will be some significant jockeying for position in Week 4 though!

LFG!

Everest in May – Day 21

You don’t really conquer a mountain, you conquer yourself. You overcome sickness and everything else – your pains, aches, fears – to reach the summit.

Jim Whittaker

On Day 21, we had our first challenger to summit via miles rucked. 114.31 miles on-the-dot at the end of Day 21. And he has already warned that he plans to usurp the lead in steps (stairs) climbed, as well. Exciting!

In other news, we passed 500 miles rucked as a collective!

Everest in May – Day 20

If by some fiat I had to restrict all this writing to one sentence, this is the one I would choose: The summit of Mt. Everest is marine limestone.

John McPhee

For any geology nerds here, you should comprehend the meaning behind the above quote. For those that are not geology nerds, the gist of the quote is that the top of Mt. Everest was once covered in water. In other words, no matter how high you may go, there is always the chance that you could go higher. That’s my take, anyway.

Day 20 and we have our first challenger to break 100 miles. We are still moving upward and we will have more people to summit, and I am fully confident that we will have some challengers to complete the challenge of 11,431 steps (stairs) climbed and 114.31 miles rucked.

Here are the numbers for Day 20:

Miles rucked On Day 20: 28.58 miles.

Miles Rucked Through 20 Days: 482.42 miles.

Steps (Stairs) Climbed on Day 20: 2,333 stairs (233.30 flights)

We had our first challenger to surpass 100 miles on Day 20, and he is within reach of the summit in miles! Will he make it on Day 21?????

We will find out!

Everest in May – Day 19

While on top of Everest, I looked across the valley towards the great peak Makalu and mentally worked out a route about how it could be climbed. It showed me that even though I was standing on top of the world, it wasn’t the end of everything. I was still looking beyond to other interesting challenges.

Edmund Hillary

Day 19 and we have our first challenger to reach the top of the Everest in May summit in steps (stairs), with 11,951 steps (stairs) climbed! What an accomplishment! So excited that we have our first challenger to summit, and on Day 19, no less! Way to go Cardoso!

Here are the numbers for Day 19:

Day 19 was exciting for the first to summit. Let’s keep that rolling into Day 20!

Everest in May – Day 18

Do the reps.

Brandon Vera

Day 18 and my back felt almost normal, so i picked it up a little to see how I responded. Longer I wait, the longer it will take for me to get this done, so I am really hoping that I can get back to normal and put some miles and steps (stairs) in.

Here are the numbers for Day 18:

We passed 50K steps (stairs) climbed!

More to come…

Everest in May – Day 17

The wonderful things in life are the things you do, not the things you have.

Reinhold Messner

Day 17 and my back is still not 100%, so I am taking this opportunity to go a little easier and focus on recovering. More than likely, Day 19 I will be back to 100%. Just means I will have to go a little harder to close out and hit my goals in the final weeks.

Here are the numbers for Day 17:

Miles rucked On Day 17: 20.10 miles.

Miles Rucked Through 17 Days: 414.42 miles. Passed the 400 miles mark!

Everest in May – Day 16

Good leaders don’t make excuses. Instead, they figure out a way to get things done.

Jocko Willink

So, my back seized up on May 15th, 2023.

I call it the Ides of Mike.

This has significantly limited my rucking miles but steps without a pack seem to be okay. So I will find a way to get things done until my back relaxes and stops treating me like a Roman dictator.

Here are the numbers for Day 16:

Miles rucked On Day 16: 29.21 miles.

Miles Rucked Through 16 Days: 394.32 miles. Almost to 400 miles!

Steps (Stairs) Climbed on Day 16: 1,320 stairs (132.00 flights)

Steps (Stairs) Climbed Through Day 16: 47,023 stairs (4,702.30 flights)

Let’s keep it up!

Everest in May – Day 15

So, let this be said: the gauntlet has been thrown down, but the faculty have answered, and answered with vigor.

Professor Gerald Lambeau, Fields Medal Winner

So, I think the updated rankings might have renewed some vigor, since Day 15 saw an increase in activity. It wasn’t a record day, but ti was definitely an elevated output in miles.

Let’s keep that spirit going!

Miles rucked On Day 15: 33.59 miles.

Miles Rucked Through 15 Days: 365.11 miles.

Steps (Stairs) Climbed on Day 15: 2,463 stairs (246.30 flights)
